The process of creating the family vision board encourages teamwork, creativity, and communication, making goal-setting meaningful and fun for the whole family!

You’ll need:

  • Poster board or large sheet of paper (find at dollar stores, craft stores, or online)
  • Magazines, old books, or printed images for cutting out pictures
  • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils for writing and decorating
  • Stickers, glitter glue, washi tape, and other embellishments to make it fun
  • Glue sticks or double-sided tape for attaching items
  • Scissors (safety scissors for younger children)

Step 1: Choose Goal Sections

Divide the vision board into sections for different areas of life. Use simple, kid-friendly categories:

  1. Kindness –  “Help a friend,” “Donate toys.”,
  2. Wellness – Body “Eat more veggies,” “Go on a nature walk.”, family wellness: eat dinner together, go to the park together
  3. Innovation – science project, build a new lego structure, try something new each month, try a new hobby
  4. Fun – “Visit the zoo,” “Build a pillow fort.”,

Step 2: Brainstorm as a Family

  • Sit together and talk about what each person wants to include. Children might need help with prompts like, “What makes you happy?” or “What’s something new you’d like to try?”
  • Write down goals as you brainstorm and have each family member contribute to every category.

Step 3: Collect Images and Words

  • Flip through magazines or search the internet to find pictures, words, or phrases that resonate with your goals.
  • Younger children can choose colorful images, while older children can cut out or write words and phrases.

Step 4: Assemble the Vision Board

  1. Lay out the poster board and break into 4 sections, one for each goal category.
  2. Have each family member contribute to decorating and arranging items in the sections.
  3. Use glue or tape to attach images, words, and drawings.
  4. Add finishing touches with stickers, glitter, or doodles for a personal touch.

Step 5: Make It Fun and Exciting

  • Play upbeat music or create a mini snack station with treats like popcorn or fruit to enjoy while you work.
  • Give everyone a chance to present their favorite part of the vision board once it’s finished.

Step 6: Display the Vision Board

  • Choose a prominent spot, such as the kitchen, family room, or a hallway, where everyone can see it daily.
  • Use poster putty or a bulletin board to hang it up.

Step 7: Check-In on Progress

  • Schedule monthly “check-ins” where the family gathers to discuss progress. Celebrate successes, adjust goals if needed, and add new ones as the year goes on.
  • Use stickers, stars, or something special to your family to mark achieved goals directly on the board.

Step 8: Celebrate Achievements

  • Plan small rewards for meeting goals, such as:
    • A special family outing (e.g., ice cream or a movie night).
    • A “Family Celebration Day” with a picnic or fun activity.
    • A “Buddy’s High-Five” award—have a printout of Buddy to hang by completed goals.
