Meaningful Meals: Snowflake Veggie Pizza

Snowflake Veggie Pizza

This recipe is easy to prepare with little hands, incorporates fresh veggies in a fun, seasonal way, and encourages creativity as children design their own “snowflakes.” To make it fun you can name each snowflake design (“Buddy’s Blizzard Pizza” or “Frozen Veggie Star”). Talk about snow and winter while cooking to create a cozy, educational experience.

Ingredients:

  1. Base Options: Whole wheat pita bread, English muffins, or flatbread.
  2. Sauce: Low-sodium marinara, hummus, or plain Greek yogurt mixed with ranch seasoning.
  3. Veggies for Decoration (Snowflake Shapes):
    • Bell peppers (red, yellow, orange, green) sliced into thin strips for “snowflake arms.”
    • Cherry tomatoes sliced into circles.
    • Broccoli florets as “snowflake centers.”
    • Shredded carrots or thinly sliced cucumbers.
    • Shredded mozzarella or plant-based cheese for a “snowy” effect.
  4. Optional Toppings: Grilled chicken, turkey pepperoni, or chickpeas.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Base:
    • Toast the pita or flatbread slightly for a crispier base.
  2. Spread the Sauce:
    • Let kids use a spoon or spatula to spread marinara, hummus, or yogurt on the bread.
  3. Decorate with Veggies:
    • Encourage children to create snowflake designs using thin strips of bell peppers and other veggies.
    • Place the broccoli floret or cherry tomato slice in the center of the snowflake.
  4. Sprinkle with Cheese:
    • Add a light sprinkle of shredded cheese to give it a snowy look.
  5. Bake or Enjoy Fresh:
    • Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 5–7 minutes, just until the cheese melts.
    • Alternatively, serve fresh if using hummus or yogurt as the base.
  6. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Let kids admire their creations before digging in, take a photo of your creation and share with @TheNestSchools on social media!
