Child Assessments

Confident. Curious. Kindergarten Ready!

At Nest, we use ongoing observation and thoughtful assessment to gain a deep understanding of each child’s unique strengths, interests, and developmental needs. This insight allows our teachers to tailor meaningful learning experiences that support every child’s individual growth and development, helping us fulfill our vision of raising a world of kind, healthy, happy, and inspired children.

Our Approach to Assessment

  • Child-centered & Play-Based: We observe children during natural play and daily routines.
  • Individualized & Growth-Oriented: Our focus is on each child’s progress, not comparison to others.
  • Consistent Checkpoints: Assessments are completed in October and March each year.

How we observe learning

  • What Observations Are: Everyday moments that capture learning in action.
  • Why We Observe: To understand, support, and plan for each child’s success.
  • How We Observe: Teachers watch and document play, language, and exploration using objective notes and photos.

What we look for in your child's Development & why it Matters

Social & Emotional

Social-emotional skills help children build friendships, express their feelings, and gain confidence. These abilities lay the foundation for cooperation, empathy, self-regulation, and a positive sense of self, all essential for a smooth transition into school and lifelong success.

Language & Communication

Strong communication helps children share their ideas, understand others, and participate fully in classroom life. Early language skills support reading, writing, problem-solving, and social interactions giving your child the tools they need to learn and connect with others.

Physical (Gross & Fine Motor)

Children use their bodies to explore, play, and learn. Developing strength, balance, and coordination helps them feel confident and capable. Fine motor skills support everyday tasks, from holding a crayon to feeding themselves, and prepare them for writing and self-help independence.

Cognitive & Thinking Skills

Cognitive development fuels curiosity, creativity, and early problem-solving. These skills help children make sense of the world, try new ideas, recognize patterns, and understand basic concepts like numbers, shapes, and cause-and-effect all stepping stones to kindergarten readiness.

Our observation and assessment process ensures that every Nest child is known, supported, and celebrated for who they are, helping them grow into confident learners and curious thinkers who are kindergarten-ready!
